Now, let’s start with my experience staying at the hotel by the Red Canal.

How to get here: It takes approx 1 hour by taxi from Mandalay International Airport, 4 hours by minivan from Bagan, and 25 mins by taxi from Mandalay bus stop. I recommend installing Grab app to get a taxi where price is set before you start your journey to the hotel.

Check-in

Because I had a door-to-door service included in my bus ticket from Bagan; I was dropped off right at the door of the hotel by the Red Canal. It was scoring heat around 1:30 pm but it was refreshing to be welcomed with a cold towel and delicious lemongrass and rosella water. A few moments later I was sitting at the check-in desk. Check-in was quick and staff were organised and English speaking.

Room

Hotel by the Red Canal offers 25 uniquely designed rooms that are named under 4 categories. The cultural adornments of the 4 major ethnic groups in Myanmar- Chin, Kachin, Rakhine and Shan. My room was Rakhine. It came with the beautiful brass bed with clean sheets, fruit basket, FREE WIFI, TV with a selection of over 100 satellite channels, air conditioning, hot and cold bath/shower, coffee & tea making facility. I liked that my room also had a desk where I could work and sofa to relax, alarm clock, room safe and room service. Also, enjoy the soft music playing on the corridors of the hotel which I initially thought was strange but I grew to like it by the time I was leaving.

Afternoon Tea

After settling into my room, it was just the right time for complimentary afternoon tea. Every day it runs from 2-4pm on first-floor canopy bar. The hotel offers a free flow of coffee, tea, some snacks and fruits. You can also sit outside on the balcony and enjoy the afternoon tea. In case you missed the afternoon tea, you can always enjoy a drinking water full of apple slices, fruits and herbs that sits on the canopy bar 24/7.

If you are feeling lazy to go around, you can try delicious Indian food at the in-house spice garden restaurant. Hotel states they are the only Indian-Myanmar fine dining restaurant in Mandalay.

Breakfast

Next morning, it was breakfast time. It was a buffet-style continental breakfast, fresh juice, tea/coffee, freshly baked goodies as well as Asian dishes. On the first morning, I had some baked goodies, fried rice, eggs, fruits and coffee. The second morning, as you can see in the picture above, I made myself a super good bowl full of good healthy things. It was a great way to start the morning in this beautiful place.

Swimming Pool

Walking around and exploring Mandalay all day in the heat, I was exhausted and sweaty. It was a perfect way to end the day relaxing by the pool. Though it is smaller in size, it was surrounded by lush tropical greenery and calming water features. And because it is around the city centre, like just 10 mins from Mandalay Palace and other attractions. It isn’t a hassle to pop back in the hotel for a dip and go out again if you wish. Such a great spot in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Mandalay.

Massage & Spa

I was tired after hiking to and back Mandalay Hill, and my legs were in need of some TLC. I was glad to find out I could have the massage at the hotel. It is named Prana Spa. Initially, I thought it would be somewhere inside the hotel building but was pleasantly surprised to find out, it is actually underground. It gave the feeling of a private cave and exclusive sanctuary. The massage was a therapeutic experience and interior looked like a rural house in Myanmar. It opens daily, just inform the staff 30 mins prior and enjoy your pampering.

Facilities and Services

What I liked the most in regards to facilities and services was the E-hub. It is a quiet business lounge where you can work without anyone bothering you. WIFI is free and strong and if you forget to bring your essentials like Laptop, it also has a few laptops that you can use. There is a little reading corner too where you can borrow books for your stay or donate your own if you like.

Another great facility in the hotel by the Red Canal is the gym. It was equipped with the basic pieces of gym equipment and not crowded at all. So, it was like your own home gym! Something worth mentioning in terms of services is Pets aren’t allowed. But the evening happy hour was a nice touch to the evening. You can enjoy complimentary snacks and buy 1 get 1 free drinks. There was also a local lady playing the Myanmar musical instrument which was super cool!

Final Thoughts

All that to say, I found the hotel by the Red Canal fully equipped with modern facilities and services. If you are looking for a hotel in Mandalay that is closer to the attractions, has a swimming pool, spa, business lounge, and good restaurant. You have hit the jackpot! First outlet of The Hotel by the Red Canal’s Spice Garden Restaurant was opened on January 2007 in Mandalay and growing. Spice Garden built its worldwide reputation through imitations of unique styles for its dinner, one of which is the style of the Royal Palace of Mandalay. It is now well known as the Spice Garden Bar and Restaurant. As a family of passionate restaurateurs, the Spice Garden Bar & Restaurant strive to create great slow foods experiences for our guests through excellent food and service.

Spice Garden offers a nightlife experience unlike any other is the perfect place for a get together. Or get your high class party, gathering party, birthday party, anniversaries party and special candle light dinner with your partners. Cooking class and catering services produce an experience like no other.

The employees at the restaurant are very amiable, they would tell you in details about authentic traditional foods. Murgh Tandoori, for instance, commonly known as Tandoori Chicken which is tender, juicy and mildly spiced to allow the natural flavor of the meat to come through, cooked in the traditional tandoor to allow a smoky charcoal flavor to seep into the meat.

Many other menu items including Naan (leavened flatbread) ” table favourites of past Moghul emperors” are available now.For starters, you can have snacks made with homemade cheese called “paneer pakoras”. Next, you can have “Kheer” (rice pudding) for dessert with its matching nuts.

A spice is a seed, fruit, root, bark, or other plant substance primarily used for flavoring, coloring or preserving food. Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are the leaves, flowers, or stems from plants used for flavoring or as a garnish. Spices are sometimes used in medicine, religious rituals, cosmetics or perfume production, or as a vegetable and it is good for health.

The decor of Spice Garden is in the colonial French House style can enjoy with garden views. You can have Old World Wines and New World Wines, such as red wine, white wine, sparkling wine, Rose’ and Champagne etc. All the menu items are in dollars, but you can, if you wish, pay in kyats (local currency) at the prevailing exchange rates. Wine prices range from USD 15 at bottle to USD 60, and the dishes range from USD 2 to USD 30.

Spice Garden serves aromatic freshly brewed coffee that goes well with your travels. Fresh healthy juices are also served. A variety of beers and soft drinks, along with beverages mentioned above, are available at competitive reasonable prices. Both indoor and alfresco settings are available. So, opening hour starts from 11:00am to 11:00pm every day. The restaurant, located in one of the quietest sections of Mandalay, No.(417) ,Corner of 22nd and 63rd Street, Aung Myae Tha Zan Township.

She welcome everybody, as the name Spice Garden herself may sound like a place for healthy drinks and strongly focuses on her healthy kitchen as well. Believes that having good healthy food plays a big roles in the success of a F&B outlet. The uniqueness of restaurant is going to be very hard to be described in words, as you will need to come and experience them for yourself.

And what so especial about Spice Garden is that we ensure happiness among staffs. Strongly believes that customers’ satisfaction and happiness is correlated to her staff’s happiness. Therefore, if their staffs are happy, they can definitely keep their customers happy.

The Charity Group of the Hotel by the Red Canal, Mandalay painted the campus of the Kuthodaw Pagoda, known as World’s Largest Book Heritage site on 11.11.2016.They announced at the Hotel social media page that anyone who wishes to join them in helping preserve one of the most important monuments in Mandalay.

The stupa itself, connected to the outside entry by means of a long corridor, is set in the middle of a thirteen acre field of 729 pitaka pagodas or shrines (Dama Cetis). Each shrine contains a marble slab, inscribed on both sides with the Pali script text of a portion the Tipitaka (Pali spelling, or Tripitaka, in Sanskrit), Theravada Buddhism’s sacred texts. Taken together, they contain the entire text of the Tipitaka and thus form “the world’s largest book.”

The slabs were carved from white Sagyin Hill marble found just a few miles north of Mandalay. The work of carving began in October 1860 and was carried out in a special hall within King Mindon’s Royal Palace. Each slab is 5 ft ((1.5 m) by 3.5 ft (1.1 m) wide and 5-6 in. (12.7 – 15 cm) thick. The Buddhist scholar/carvers completed their task in May 1869. If spread out horizontally, the slabs would cover a third of an acre (.1 ha); stacked vertically, the ‘pages’ would rise 340 ft (103 m).

This shows how much Myanmar People care about well-being of their guests.Zayat for visitors are available in almost all the villages of Myanmar. Any Visitors are welcome to stay in any monastery if they prefer.

There’s a Myanamar saying that goes,”People only like to pay visit to sweet homes”. Myanmar people take pride when they are called on by visitors. They are proud of being sweet home which people like to visit.Mandalay has market for various kinds of crops, timber, metals and gems from every party of Upper Myanmar, Mandalay also serves as main tracking place for border trade with China, India and Thailand.Many people come to Mandalay for recreation, for improving their knowledge and for seeking connections with new markets.

As the time changes, the hotels, motels and inns develops to keep up with the modern times. As Myanmar People like to give accommodation for visitors, anyone will receive cordial hospitality from his host whichever hotel or guesthouse he stay in. Along with the development in business, the hotels and guesthouses came to have various standards. A traveler can choose whatever he likes but the hospitality will be the same, in spite of difference in rent and standard. Because of Mandalay’s friendliness, the visitors will feel more at home.

The Mandalay streets are laid out in a grid system, and are numbered east to west (up to 49th) and north to south (over 50th).Addresses show the block where the building is located by giving the main street which it is on and the streets which is between: for example, 56th (between 19th and 20th Street).

There are Six Townships, namely Aung Myae Thar San, Chan Aye Thar San, Mahar Aung Myay, Chan Mya Thar Si, Pyi Gyi Tagon and Amarapura.

Moreover, Mandalay is well known for its pagodas and historical buildings; Maha Muni Pagoda, Maha Thatkya Thiha Pagoda, Shwe Kyee Myin Pagoda, Sanda Muni Pagoda, Kutho Daw, Atu Mashi Monastery, Golden Palace Monastery, Mandalay Hill, Yankin Hill and U Bein Bridge.

The heart of the city dominated by Zegyo market. The Clock Tower, built in 1903 to commemorate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. Eain Daw Yar Pagoda, a very popular pagoda known for fulfilling wishes. St Joseph’s Cathedral (Father Lafon Church), a gothic style church built by French Fathers in 1894. Shari Krishna Temple, built during the Japanese occupation during World War II. Gold leaf being made at the small workshop. Catch a film at Myo Ma and Win Light Cinema, the largest cinema in Mandalay. Htoe Mont, Mandalay’s most famous sweet snack, fresh fruits at Thit Thee Dan Market, Fresh vegetables from the many street sellers, Coconut rice and Biryani from the night time street sellers, Indian Snacks, Shan, Chinese and Myanmar foods, late night snacks at the 24-hour tea shops and restaurants along 35th St by the eastern edge of Yan Gyi Aung Bridge are part of Mandalay city.

North of Mandalay is the main historical and religious area of Mandalay with many ancient pagodas and monasteries. Sunset from the view of the Su Taung Pyae Pagoda on top of the Mandalay Hill is famous for its panoramic views over the city. U Khan Ti Museum which houses and interesting collection of historical and religious items at the footage of the Mandalay Hill. There’s also Kutheikhtaryon Ingyin Pagoda (Sal Tree Forest Pagoda), a man-made forest surrounding and ancient recling Buddha statue at the footage of the hill. Kuthodaw Pagoda, the biggest book in the world with 729 marble slabs etched with the words of Tipitaka won’t be missed out to see in Mandalay. Have fun at Yadanapon Garden with its 55 acres of green space with a zoo, swimming pool, and amusement zone. Can practice your golf swing at the Asia Centre Golf course and Keep fit by walking up Mandalay Hill. Paintings at the many art galleries at the base of Mandalay Hill is one of the attractive places for tourists. There are cold drink shops and tea shops scattered around the base of Mandalay Hill. National Theatre which hosts regular traditional performances. Shwe Nandaw Kyaung called Golden Palace Monastery , an ancient ornately carved teak monastery built in 1880. Atumashi Monastery , the largest monastery in Mandalay with a unique five-tied terraced roof is famous.Visit Mandalay Palace by entering through the main entrance, U Hteik Gate, on the east site of the moat.

Fresh Foods and vegetables available from the villages to the east of Mandalay at Nan Shay Market. There’s also have Myee Shay, Salads and other snack shops along 19th Street. Visit Mya Kyauk Monastery and ask for a bottle of mineral water from the Mya Kyauk natural spring. Yankin Hill, climb the hill to see views over the countryside and see the statue of three golden fishes at the top which are believed to bring the rain during droughts. And can learn to ride a horse or have a painball fight at Nature’s life.
